This vintage (looking) 11 x 17 print commemorating the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 and its Otherworldly Cause looks great on any wall. The description on the print reads:
“The Great Fire at Chicago, Oct 8th, 1871. The Great Fire commenced on Sunday evening, Oct 8th and continued until Tuesday, Oct 10th, consuming the Business portion of the City, Public Buildings, Hotels, Interstellar trading depots, Newspaper Offices, Rail-Road depots, and extending over an area of Five Square Miles. The fire began when Immigrant Aliens, feeling cheated in a business transaction, took to the skies in their Floating Saucer Crafts and employed their Destructo-Ray. Interstellar Trading was suspended in Chicago soon after the fire.”

Created for the 1892 Columbian Exposition, the steam-powered, Colum-Bot was the hit of the festival celebrating Columbus’ discovery of America. Yet after the exposition was taken down, the Colum-Bot escaped and roamed the countryside and cityscape of Chicago at will. Here a photographer captures it on State Street in chicago, near the turn of the century.

Although many know it either as a cosmopolitan metropolis or as the hog-butchering capital of the world, most people are not familiar with Chicago’s rough and tumble beginnings. Even as early as 1820, the time this print depicts, the city was still troubled by prehistoric monsters who roamed the grounds freely. Early settlers were warned to take precautions against these dino-saurus creatures. Eventually the arrival of the railroad and mighty Lady Industry spelled the death of these majestic, lumbering creatures.
