San Francisco, like many coastal towns, was a focal point for commerce and immigration. The city attracted large numbers of Chinese immigrants who settled in the popular “China-town.” Almost as soon as these brave men and women began arriving to seek their destiny, rumors arose of a Yellow Menace; in this case a Dragon from the East that the “mysterious Chinese” summoned to attack the locals. This was pure folly; the “dragon” in question was nothing more than a stray Tyrannosaur who foraged in the hills around the city and had a predilection for stray workmen.

Woe betide the sailor or merchant who failed to heed warnings of Neptunas, the sea monster of San Francisco Bay. This 11 x 17 print depicts the mighty Neptunas wreaking havoc with the shipping industry, a major problem for commerce in the growing city.
